Renowned Tennis Coach Kurt Collis' Pickleball Story

September 6, 2017

Over the summer the City of DeLand had the two north tennis courts of the David E Disney
Tennis Center resurfaced and built six permanent, designated Pickleball courts there instead. In
celebration of these new, wonderful courts the Kurt Collis Tennis Academy hosted a Doubles
Pickleball Shootout, an unsanctioned tournament, where Advanced and Intermediate players
battled it out for trophies and gift card prizes.
Several teams had never played in a tournament before and were very pleased with the amount
of matches (3 in a two hour span) format, snacks available for everyone, the organization and
the beautiful new courts. We had four teams in the Advanced division who had a hard fight for
first place with the top teams match going well into three sets with Mark Johnston and Keith
Kelly the champions against Justin and Stephen Seitz taking home the gold trophy and $30 in
gift cards each champion.
Tim and Jeanette Malone have been playing for a long time but this was her first time playing in
a tournament. They won the Intermediate Division taking home the trophy and $20 in gift cards
each. Her husband, Tim, was very proud of their achievement but not surprised by Jeanette’s
skills. A 13 year old son, Evan and his father, Eric Enrique also played their first tournament
and won First Place in the Consolation draw. While we had opened it up to beginner players no
one registered; however we had at least eight people arrive during the tournament and mention
that they would have liked to join but felt that as a beginner they wanted to see what a
tournament looked like first. All of them agreed to come back for the next tournament and play!
It can be intimidating to try something new and then jump into your first tournament. Which is
why we divide up players along skill levels. Everyone gets a chance to play at their level and
enjoy the competition of same level competitors.
The next event will include mens’s doubles, women’s doubles, mixed doubles and a round robin
for kids and beginners to introduce them to the sport and get them started and playing this great
sport. THE NEXT EVENT WILL BE HELD ON – October 21-22
FIND YOUR PARTNER, AND GET SIGNED UP TODAY…THEN spread the word and tell your
friends to come and join us for the fun time on the Pickleball courts.
We are starting up fun adult and junior Pickleball clinics to help everyone become more
comfortable with their game and teach them how to overcome their fears. They said they would
participate in our next event. Please go to DELandPickleball.com to let us know what you would
like to learn and what type of clinic you would like to participate in.
This is a great sport for all ages. This summer during the fun Kurt Collis Tennis Academy Tennis
Camps, I introduced Pickleball to the campers. We had kids as young as 4 years old playing this
fun great sport in a clinic. This is the fastest growing sport in the country.
