The Debut of the WSA Kids Tennis Camp

The World Sports Alumni & Hippie Strings teamed up last week to hold their first kids summer camp in East Orlando. Many students attended the camp and they were fresh and eager to learn all the fundamentals of tennis. Just some of the bright and delightful students include Matthew Victor, Nathaniel Foster, Ariana Choi Williams, Jamie Sakata, Cynthia Clayton and Jiwoo Park. The kids ranged from 6 to 12 years of age. Each one was smiley, bright eyed and enjoyed all the fun games and drills designed to give a solid foundation for the young beginners.

During the four day camp that lasted for 2 and a half hours each day the kids worked with several wonderful coaches. Coach Bucky Parel, owner of Hippie Strings and former Team Captain and line 1 and 2 player for East River High School, headed the younger kids. Coach Zip Parel, the current line 1 player for East River High School, headed the older kids. Coach Dash Parel and Racer Parel led more focused individual skills stations. Coaches Charlie “The Dragon” Williams and Daniel Parel provided additional support. With all the Coaches on deck each and all the kids got valuable individual one on one time and attention to focus on their strengths and weakness.

On the final day of camp a skills test was held where all the kid's where able to demonstrate their skills in front of an audience and parents. Each were given points based on their forehand, backhand, volley and serves. With 6 year old Ariana winning the contest with 44 points and Nathaniel coming in second with 41 points. Nathaniel Foster in the end won his first tennis tournament by defeating Ariana by one point. Popsicles and graduation certificates were well earned!

Since the debut camp was a such a success the parents and kids have requested more clinics in the future. The WSA and Hippie Strings will be having weekly individual and group lessons available for those looking to work on their tennis fundamentals.
